Modern Kitchen Renovation in Chelsea SW3

A luxury kitchen transformation in a period Chelsea townhouse — combining contemporary design with the character of a Victorian property.

Project Overview

Our clients in Chelsea SW3 wanted to transform the kitchen of their three-storey Victorian townhouse into a bright, contemporary living space while preserving the elegance and proportions of the original property. The previous kitchen was enclosed and disconnected from the rest of the home, with limited natural light and a layout that no longer reflected the way the family lived and entertained.

The brief was to create a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area that would become the centrepiece of the home, combining modern functionality with a refined aesthetic suited to one of London's most prestigious postcodes. The result is a light-filled space with clean architectural lines, premium materials and a warm, understated luxury feel.

Scope of Work

  • Full strip-out of the existing kitchen, flooring and internal finishes
  • Structural opening and installation of concealed steel supports to create a seamless open-plan layout
  • Bespoke contemporary cabinetry with handleless detailing and integrated storage solutions
  • Contrasting cabinetry finishes featuring light neutral perimeter units and darker statement island elements
  • Large-format composite stone worktops with waterfall edges and matching splashback details
  • Fully integrated appliances including induction hob, double ovens, wine cooler and integrated fridge-freezer
  • Lighting design including dimmable LED downlights, decorative pendant lighting above the island and concealed under-cabinet task lighting
  • Brass fixtures and accents providing warmth and a premium finish

Challenges

Period properties in Chelsea present unique challenges. The original walls were a mix of lathe-and-plaster and exposed brick, requiring careful preparation before new finishes could be applied. The structural opening demanded close collaboration with a structural engineer, and the steel beam installation had to be completed with minimal disruption to the floors above.

Access was another consideration — the property is mid-terrace with no rear vehicle access, so all materials had to be carried through the house. We scheduled deliveries carefully to minimise disruption to the clients and their neighbours.

Our Solution

We began with a two-week strip-out and structural phase, installing the steel beam and preparing all surfaces. Our carpenters then fitted the bespoke cabinetry, which had been manufactured off-site to exact specifications. The underfloor heating was laid on an insulation board to maximise efficiency, and the porcelain tiles were laid with precision to achieve a seamless finish.

The lighting scheme was designed in three circuits — ambient, task, and feature — all controllable via smart dimmers. The result is a kitchen that feels warm and inviting in the evening, yet bright and functional during the day.

Results

The finished kitchen has completely transformed the ground floor of the property. The open-plan layout floods the space with natural light, and the bespoke cabinetry gives the room a timeless elegance.

The project was completed on schedule within six weeks and delivered within the agreed budget.
