Floor Sanding, Staining & Lacquering at a Cambridge School

Large-scale restoration of an original herringbone parquet floor across a Cambridge school, sanded back to bare timber, stained, and finished with a hard-wearing lacquer.

Project Overview

A school in Cambridge engaged Pro House to restore the original herringbone parquet flooring across a large open floor plate. After years of heavy school use the floor had lost its finish and developed wear, scratches, and uneven colour throughout. The brief was to bring the timber back to a uniform, durable, high-quality finish without replacing the original parquet.

Scope of Work

  • Full floor sanding of the existing herringbone parquet back to bare timber, removing the old finish, scratches, and surface staining
  • Fine sanding and grain preparation to achieve a smooth, even substrate ready for finishing
  • Application of a stain across the entire floor area to unify the colour and deepen the timber tone
  • Sealing and lacquering with a hard-wearing finish suitable for high-traffic school environments
  • Multiple lacquer coats with intermediate sanding for a smooth, even, long-lasting surface
  • Careful protection of surrounding finishes, columns, and joinery throughout the works

Results

The finished floor shows the original parquet at its best, a rich, uniform stain across the entire area with a clean lacquered surface that will stand up to daily school use. The transformation between the worn pre-works floor and the restored finish is dramatic, while preserving every piece of the original timber.
